Recent thoughts and rants

I don't think I have any pictures to go with this, this is just random things that I've been thinking of recently.

If there's 1 thing I've learned from Walden Pond it is this. You can never live a cheaper, fuller and healthier life than if you do it yourself. This leads me to believe that I can be healither and cheaper by cooking myself. But this is not always the case. I can go to the store and spend $1 on carrots, $1.50 on celery, $1 on onions, $6 on a chicken, I'll sy that I spend about $.50 on spices, a buck or 2 on noodles and I have 4 to 6 servings of chicken noodle soup for a total of $12. But I can buy a can of it for $2. So either I make it for $2/ serving or I can buy it for the same cost. True, my soup tastes better than the can. However, it also takes 2 min to make it from a can and about 10-12 hours to make it from scratch. So there's some give and take both ways. My soup may be healthier but the Campbells can sit on the shelf for a year, available for me anytime.

I realize that Thoreau would say I was silly. By raising my own chickens and using veggies from my own farm I could create gallons of chicken noodle soup for pennies or less. And on a more obvious note he would probably say that his book was talking about a quality of life, not cheap chicken noodle soup. But hopefully you see where I'm coming from with this.

Now that I've established my thought process I can jump to the point. As much as I hate the idea of putting all the additives from processed food into my body. As much as I can use my skills to cook just about anything. The fact is, it's difficult for me to pass up things like Hot Pockets $2 each, Totinos Pizza for a dollar each or chicken pot pies for $.60 each.

Okay, let a mom (oh, yea, your mom) with LOTS of experience speak. $12 for all that food. Cut the finished product into two parts. Freeze one part and use the other. That cuts the cost to $3.00 per person. Also subtract the cost for the doctor and hospital when all that fat and processed food puts you in the hospital with pancreatitis (somewhere around $50,000) and you're actually making money each time you make it from scratch.

We used to be the same way until there were so many of us.

I forgot to factor in the $50K for pancreatitis. Silly me.

and taco bell... who can justify spending $27 at the grocery store when you can get 10 tacos for 6.99 before 6:00 ???
Ah, warm and gooey goodness.

Now, eating out healthy is a different story all together. I "ran" to lunch the other day by myself to my favorite sushi bar... $15 and I was hungry leaving. This morning's birthday breakfast at Marie's was $43 (not including the tip)... and for Billy and I to have lunch at our favorite Indian restaraunt is $30 every time.

But the goodness... the goodness of it all.

Oh Chris... did no one tell you that after you have three children, you are absolutely outnumbered and there IS no time to eat.

Well, I'm 20 pounds overweight so that can't be entirely true.

Where is the first place you want to go??

Mom does not need staggered visits. She can make it just fine even if she drives herself. Wouldn't it be fun to have us all together for a bit. (Except for Bill and David who are busy guys--we would definitely miss them both)

Now I'm all confused. What's the plan?
